Acapulcois the nearest beach resort to the world's largest city. The Autopista del Sol (Highway of the Sun) offers fast and convenient travel from Mexico City to Acapulco by automobile in little more than three hours. Upscale Mexico City residents who would have previously spent their holidays and weekends in Cuernavaca and surrounding places now prefer the easy access to our beaches and perfect year round climate. Acapulco International airport has also benefited from major improvements and a has a separate terminal for privately owned aircraft.
Diamond Point (Punta Diamante) is Acapulco's newest residential and tourist project. Punta Diamante has a 30 mile long beach and open green areas. Between the Costera (Avenida Costera Miguel Aleman, the main boulevard which hugs the Bay of Acapulco) and the airport is a ten mile coastal strip of land which remained under developed for many years. This is now known as Punta Diamante. The newly renovated Acapulco Princess and adjoining old world elegance of the Pierre Marquez, with their surrounding first class golf courses have now been joined by new hotels and luxury condominiums. Nearby are Brisas Marquez, Lomas del Marquez, La Cima and Joyas de Brisamar. Important commercial sites include the Camino Real, Quinta Real, Mayan Palace hotels and Tres Vidas Golf Club (one of the three best course in the world) and private estates. More than a two dozen condominiums have been built and another twelve are in the planning stage. About five minutes from the Costera is Fraccionamiento Las Brisas with over 200 luxurious villas. Nearby Marina Brisas and Guitarron contain many houses and condominiums. The hotel Las Brisas rests majestically in the hills with its wonderful casitas and private pools.
The
Escenica (Scenic Highway) leads to all of the above mentioned areas and
to the airport. Traveling on this highway in the opposite direction we
arrive on the Costera Miguel Aleman which is lined with hotels, stores,
restaurants and tourist attractions. The first section on the Costera on
this approach is called the Zona Dorada (Golden Zone). Here are a number
of popular residential areas and the best shopping in Acapulco.
Costa Azul (Blue Coast or Cote de Azur) begins just off the Costera and extends back into the hills with lovely views of the city and bay. Costa Azul is a favorite choice for many Acapulco residents. The neighborhood streets are full of small stores and intimate, easy dining restaurants. On the Costera in the Golden Zone is the 18 hole Club Deportivo Golf and Tennis Club.
Behind
the Club Deportivo are truly beautiful low and high mountain residential
sections. Located here also is the legendary Hotel Villa Vera (recently
totally renovated), Spa and Tennis Club, On the bay side of the Costera
are many new condominium towers along with some of the older and smaller, classic
apartment buildings. These waterfront properties are particularly sought
after. Other in town communities off the Costera and nestled into the hills
are Magallanes, Hornos Insurgentes, Vista Alegre. Most of these are home
to Acapulco residents but are frequent choices for foreigners as well both
for their accessible prices and in town conveniences.
The bay of Caleta is traditional Acapulco. This is where it all began and still contains many exquisite homes with stunning views of the bay and open ocean. Except for major national holidays this area is virtually free of heavy tourist traffic. Also in this part of town is Las Playas and some of the most famous old hotels in Acapulco like the Flamingos and Boca Chica.
